Q and A with Aakriti Kochar

Well recognized and professional wedding makeup artist. Advertising makeup, fashion & celebrity makeup are also her specialty

Tell us about recent makeup trends you find interesting ?
Bridal Makeup Trends in India have recently been a blend of traditional and modern in respect to Makeup & Hairstyling. While we adorn our wedding traditions, it is also important to keep up with the evolving global trends. I foresee upcoming trends to be all about glow and radiance which is a glass like shining skin over a matter skin finish for brides. Eyes are the most experimental part of Indian makeup culture, from glitter to colored shadows and smoky eyes – we see all variations on brides over different functions. To make it easy, I prefer a pop of colour on the eyes for mehndi, sultry smoky eyes for cocktail with pale but glossy lips  and traditional sparkly gold, rose gold, bronzed eyes with lots of kohl and beautiful lashes for the big day. Colored eyeliners are a lot of fun to work with as well.

In a post Covid19 scenario, with more focus on cleanliness & hygiene, what  will be the key impacts in the way a MUA operates and the process involved?
Cleanliness & Hygiene have always been an utmost focus for a makeup artist since we work so closely with brides & families. From clean brushes, organised makeup stations, sterilising brushes and other equipment, not using products (such as lipsticks) directly onto clients but with brushes, etc. But furthermore, it has become our responsibility to update hygiene and safety for clients as well as ourselves. I must suggest my fellow makeup artist to clean top layer of baked powdered products (eye shadows, blush etc) with clean dry tissue before & after application, use a palette to take out liquid and creamy products as per requirement each time and close the bottles tightly until next use, use disposable wands for mascara, lip products for every use and dispose them every time. Wearing disposable masks and gloves is advisable once we get back to work soon after lockdowns over for a few months at least. Sanitizing your hands and tools more than you used to before will also be essential.

What is the most important beauty advice that you can suggest for future brides in this scenario?
Current pandemic is playing difficult on both our physical and mental health. For future brides, I would like to encourage them to use this time to the fullest in taking care of both. For mental health, practice meditation breathing exercises with OM chanting music (available on you tube for music and guidance for first timers), indulge in some form of workout whether it be yoga, zumba, walk, HIIT,etc. Take care of your skin while you are inside the house and breathing fresh air. Exfoliate your skin often followed by a face mask to keep your skin shining and smooth. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, along with some probiotics for a clearer skin.

How do you describe your signature look & style?
My signature style is a fierce modern bride who keeps up with current trends but taking hints from our traditions. Some sexy smoky, and bright glittery is a broad variation where almost every Indian bride can fit into.

Do you usually do a trial makeup session?
I encourage brides to take a party makeup and hair styling session with me instead of a trial. That explains and gives more clarity with the complete look , rather than a trial. I am also open to consultations with all of my brides for their pre wedding routine to follow and looks for the wedding functions.

Any other points that you wish to add?
Maintain a good rapport with your makeup artist, your attitude can really make or break your look. No matter how expensive your jewellery is and which designer is your outfit from, it does not hold a candle in front of your face on the wedding day.
